There are many reasons for "joining" the McLean Alumni & Friends Association. Most people can find more than one reason! First, it doesn't cost anything to join! If you attended McLean High School as a student, or were on the staff or faculty and we have your current address, you're automatically a member. If we can't find you, then you won't get any of the benefits of the Association.
Are there one or two people that you went to high school with, that you'd really like to see again? Maybe you were best friends then but you've lost touch over the years. Renew your friendship by locating them through the association.
We might not have liked all our teachers, but most of us have one or two teachers that made a real difference in our lives. We might have known they were special at the time, or it might have taken us years to see what they really taught us about life and about ourselves. Many of those special teachers are no longer with us, so if there's a teacher or member of the staff who really made a difference in your life, now is a good time to start looking for them again. We had many current and retired teachers attend the 1995 Fortieth Anniversary Celebration; that was one of the fun things about a school-wide celebration!
We no longer charge annual dues, but you can volunteer to help with our fund raising activities. Part of the money we raise covers the cost of maintaining this web site, but the remainder of the money goes to fund various programs at the high school, enriching the curriculum for the current students. And every year we give a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior!
Many people prefer to do business with people they know, their old classmates. Business networking is another benefit of "joining" the association and attending the social events.
Each class usually does their own reunion, although some classes hold joint reunions to spread the work among more people. These reunions vary in planning and execution from elaborate semi-formal affairs to more casual events, but all of them share the same spirit of old friends getting together, remembering the fun times they had in high school! In October of 1995 we put on the McLean Fortieth Anniversary Celebration (McFAC!), with over 1,100 people from all the classes since the school was built, coming together for dinner at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner. Several hundred more people joined the event for the dancing and socializing after dinner, and the event made TV news across the city that night. Both Virginia Senators attended along with other dignataries, the noise level was incredible as people met and reminisced, and the party went on in various places until morning! The next day thousands of people showed up for the homecoming football game and watched McLean beat Madison, 17 to 16, before the team went on to their best winning season ever, coming within a game of winning the state title!
Joining the association costs nothing (!), and it provides you with a lot, including these web pages. We're always working to improve them and keep the address data current. You also get all the web news such as upcoming class reunions and school-wide events like the big fall dance and social. Please take a minute to send us your current mailing address for our files. Thanks so much!
