of 1966 and 1967 |
September 14, 15, 2007 |
The Class of 1966 and the Class of 1967 held a fabulously successful
event over three days in September.
The Friday night cocktail party was a hit, despite the fact that the
hotel decided to tear out all the carpet in the hallway leading to the room,
and replace it. More than one
person walked through the fresh glue before they got the new carpet
down. Also, the hotel forgot to
get a bartender in place, so everyone had to behave for the beginning of the
event until the bar opened late.
No problem—the classes made up for it later. Saturday we had a picnic at But Saturday night the party got rolling again back at the
Courtyard Marriott with the MHS alumni DJ, and a nice spread of food. This time the bar was set up, many of
the guests knew where everything was, the carpet was securely back in place
and the glue pots put away (no sniffing!), and the food warm and tasty. We paused to recognize those who had
travelled the furthest (Vera Cruz, Sunday morning the survivors got together for breakfast, or took
off for various unplanned small group events around town. We billed this as the LAST CHANCE REUNION because none of the ’66 or ’67 organizers plan to do another one, but it was such a hit that the talk immediately started about the next one. So, if you want to organize the 50th in 2017, feel free to step up and get it rolling! There are plenty of people who want to do it again! Feel free to contact Jeff Cochran (’66), or Paul Barkley (’67), both of whom are now officially retired from reunion planning! |

November 17, 2007 |
The Class of 1982 held their 25th reunion the weekend of November 17, 2007. The reunion started with a gathering at eCitie in Tyson's Corner on Friday night. The showing from the Class of 1982 was excellent. We didn't keep count but there were at least 70 alumni on Friday and they were successful in closing the place and then moving the party to a local hotel room and we understand, called it quits around 4 am. Saturday morning, a "ladies only" breakfast was held. There were about 20 or so in attendance and everyone enjoyed the low-key environment and shared lots of stories and updates on what they have been up to since 1982. The main event at the Sheraton Tyson's on Saturday had approximately 110 classmates (135 including significant others) signed up and we exceeded that with many walk-ins. The evening started at 7 pm with cocktails adjacent to the indoor pool followed by a buffet dinner and music until 1 am. Several awards were given for most marriages, most kids and travelled farthest to attend the reunion. People came from AR, CA, CT, FL, GA, IA, LA, NC, NJ, NY, OH, TX, UT, VA, and WA as well as many from the DC Metro area. The music stopped at 1 am and we moved to the hospitality suite. Despite being a little loud we weren't thrown out. The majority of the 50 people in the suite didn't leave until 4 am. However, we understand that a few made it until 6 am and beyond! Unbelievable!!! Between
the Friday and Saturday events, about one-third of the graduating class
participated. As we were planning the event, we were able to verify the
whereabouts of about 55% of the class. We aren't sure we know where the
other 45% is. We mailed invitations in two waves, worked the phones and
even paid for access to a database to search people out. We apologize
if you weren't aware of the events but the data on some classmates is dated
and inaccurate. If you have not been in contact with the alumni
association or the Class of 1982 25th If
you want to stay tuned into your Class of 1982 classmates and catch up on
what everyone has been sharing about themselves, up to and including the 25th
reunion (pictures included), please sign up at groups.yahoo.com/group/McLeanHS82/
Your access will be screened but once granted you'll be able to really
converse with your classmates in an access controlled area. |

On We started
off the reunion weekend on Friday morning with some classmates hitting a
local golf course and playing 18 holes. At the
reunion classmates enjoyed heavy hors d’oeuvres, a pasta station and
cash bar all while catching up with one another and enjoying music from a DJ. Debbie
Strom (Goodrich) led the compilation of a slide show which featured video
footage from the Senior Talent Show and Graduation as well as candid
classmate photos from elementary school through high school. David
Maxwell provided memorabilia including a journal of signatures from 6th
grade! Special
recognition must also go to Gaye Nail-Lins who created a webpage for
classmates to get in touch, share news and photos. For anyone not yet registered go to: mcleanhigh87@yahoogroups.com and send a
request to Gaye to join. A
special thanks to everyone who came out and to those that didn't, we missed
you!! |

After talking about holding an annual multi-class

opted for a last minute, casual affair this year, dubbing it the First Annual

We met at eCiti, a new hot spot Cafe and Bar in the
Tysons Corner area. About 500 alumni showed up, a better than expected turnout
on short notice, and soon clumped into year groups around the various bars and
seating areas for the requisite chit chat. Starting at 6 p.m., the number of
people and the noise level grew throughout the evening until the DJ kicked off
the dancing around 9:00 with hot music from the decades. The alumni committee
judged the event a big success, and vowed to organize next year's event well in
advance!

The Class of 1967 attended the current Homecoming
events including a tour of the high school at noon and the football game, and
met up with one another in the Alumni Gathering Room during the game, where the
various yearbooks were consulted. Various spontaneous events broke out Saturday
during the day as alumni arrived from all over the country, and revisited sites
memorable to the class, such as McDonald's, where everyone backed in, something
not allowed in 1967!

We spent all our time in the alumni gathering room,
where we had all the yearbooks from 1957 to 1997 on display for alumni to look
over along with some other memorabilia. There were free cookies, candy (well,
it was the day after Halloween, you know), and soft drinks, and a number of
alumni dropped by to chat and get out of the rain. We sold Christmas tree
ornaments and tee shirts, and had sign up sheets so alumni could let others
know they were there at the game. This is the first year that we had the alumni
gathering room, and we expect to make it an annual affair.
After the game, current students got ready for their
Homecoming dance, and the alumni went over to a local bar and restaurant for an
open mixer. In all, it was a super day for catching up with old friends, even
with the rain!
Around a hundred people attended the 30th reunion
last year, but we're waiting for the details to come in...
The class of '76 had a very successful 20th reunion
on July 26-28, 1996. Despite being held the same time as the Atlanta Summer
Olympics (which several classmates elected to go to instead...shocking!), and
following on the heels of the McFAC and a still-contested Classes of '75 and
'76 combo reunion just a few months earlier, we still had about 250 people in
attendance.
The theme, which was praised to the skies, was casual
and informal. No fancy, seated dinners for the Bicentenntial Class. We made a
weekend of it: a Friday Night Happy Hour (that stretched into hours, actually)
at Kilroy's in
The chair for the 20th reunion was Jo Ann Weiss,
ably assisted by Mary Melley Blissard, Terri George Morris, Whit Rinaldo,
Warren Whitley, Peggy Judd Mayhew, Karla Lutz Yocum, Cecilia Tejada, and Lisa
Karlowicz Halsted.
The McLean Band program provided many students with
unique opportunities and special friendships. At
Since I graduated in 1982 there has only been one
other time alumni band members have met. In 1985 a "Band BBQ" was
held at
The band program has changed significantly over the
years. They purchased new uniforms a couple of years ago (over $10,000), lost
funding to go to away games and, on the positive side, have filled the band
room with numerous trophies. The program still has great pride and I would like
to see more interaction between alumni and the current program.
Last year's Homecoming Game/MHS Band Alumni event is
what I hope is the start of many more events where we can keep in touch. Due to
limited funding, last year's MHS Band Alumni event included only 1978-1984
graduating years. Building a data base of band members is very difficult since
the only records maintained by the band are from 1982 to present. Looking
through yearbooks and our memories helped reconstruct 1978-1982 data. More
research would be needed to find band participants before 1978.
If you're interested in being contacted by email or
regular mail please email me and provide some details about your graduating
year and what you did in the band (instrument, flags, drill team, etc.) and any
leads on other band alumni. Spread the word...it would be great to see/meet
more people at the 1997 Homecoming Game. An official Band Alumni mailing will
be sent sometime in August detailing the plans for Homecoming. Email me with ideas or suggestions. I hope to hear from MHS Band Alumni soon! Information from Paul Torpey, MHS '82.
